Device ID and CFI (ID-CFI) ASO

Therearetwotraditionalmethodsforsystemstoidentifythetypeofflashmemoryinstalledinthesystem.One

hastraditionallybeencalledAutoselectandisnowreferredtoasDeviceIdentification(ID).Theothermethodis

calledCommonFlashInterface(CFI).

ForID,acommandisusedtoenableanaddressspaceoverlaywhereupto16wordlocationscanbereadto

getJEDECmanufactureridentification(ID),deviceID,andsomeconfigurationandprotectionstatusinformation

fromtheflashmemory.ThesystemcanusethemanufactureranddeviceIDstoselecttheappropriatedriver

softwaretousewiththeflashdevice.

CFI also uses a command to enable an address space overlay where an extendable table of standard

informationabouthowtheflashmemoryisorganizedandoperatescanberead.Withthismethodthedriver

softwaredoesnothavetobewrittenwiththespecificsofeachpossiblememorydeviceinmind.Insteadthe

driversoftwareiswritteninamoregeneralwaytohandlemanydifferentdevicesbutadjuststhedriverbehavior

basedontheinformationintheCFItable.
